Creating Smaller Carbon Footprint

Double A announces that one ream of Double A Paper reduces 12.5 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent from atmosphere.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an environmental tool used to measure the environmental impact of a service or a product in every step of its entire life that is from birth through to its end of life (cradle to death). The scope of Double A's LCA on the other hand is limited from cradle to mill gate only as emission from transportation, shipment to end users and final disposal are factors that are out of Double A's control.

Project Scope: Cradle to Mill Gate

From the Double A LCA study carried out by independent institutions namely Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the National Center of Excellence for Environmental and Hazardous Waste Management, Chulalongkorn University (CU), Double A was able to figure out its Carbon Footprint (the amount of carbon dioxide equivalent emission) and Carbon Offset (amount of carbon dioxide equivalent absorbed) from "cradle to mill gate" following the internationally accepted standards and methodologies of ISO 14001 and other international relevant standards such as the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) ten toes of carbon footprint measurement of paper and board products.

Double A considered two scenarios for the carbon footprint: low carbon with pure biomass as the source of power and High carbon with power generated from a combination of biomass and power from production energy sources.

Double A's low carbon footprint is 990kg carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent per ton of paper while high carbon footprint of 2, 500 kg CO2 equivalent per ton of paper. The millions of Double A Paper-Tree planted along unused spaces in between Thai farmer's land can absorb carbon dioxide equivalent to 7, 500 kg CO2 per ton of paper produced thus Double A can claim to be operating in a "carbon neutral" position.

To simplify, the carbon footprint and carbon offset results can be translated to a 12.5 CO2 equivalent reduction per ream of Double A paper derived as follows:

7,500 kg CO2 offset – 2, 500 kg CO2 footprint = 5,000 kg CO2 offset

5,000 kg CO2 offset = 1,000 kg of paper

           5 kg CO2 offset = 1 kg of paper
5 kg CO2 offset X 2.5* kg = 12.5 kg CO2 reduction per ream of paper
*Note: 2.5 kg is the weight of one ream Double A A4 80 gsm.

  • 100 million trees 6.7 million tons* *Weight of tree in calculation is 70 kg. on the average By the next 3 years, before its harvest period, these Double A Paper Trees will have reduced 6,539 million tons of CO2 in the atmosphere.
