Double A Global

Double A's Philosophy

Double A's business philosophy is centered to the principles of Sustainable business development with the responsibility to faithfully practice international standards and spearhead significant environmental and socio-economic relevant campaigns in order to achieve a balance among the three pillars of Sustainability: Environmental, Social and Economic responsibilities. Double A always believes that in order to achieve long term sustainability, it must truly fulfil its responsibilities towards the 3 sustainable pillars of Double A Business.

Environmental Sustainability

Double A considers that environmental responsible operations significantly contribute towards attaining a sustainable future. Double A product lines and every single sheet of Double A paper is produced with a good balance between product quality and environmental social care. In Double A's manufacturing process, the company adhere to the use of "raw materials" that it is capable to "Cultivate", "Conserve" and "Generate" without interfering the nature and the ecosystem

• Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Sequestration from "Cultivated" Double A Paper-Tree

Double A uses 100% virgin fiber sourced from Double A Paper-Tree which are cultivated and grown along Thai farmer's rice paddies. Double A Paper-Tree are fast growing and can be felled only after 3-5 years. The 400 million paper trees reduce 6.7 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) emission per year. While other paper manufacturers deliberately convert farm lands and natural forest to tree plantations, Double A brings out the real value of this KHAN-NA to cultivate its raw materials and at the same time introduces a huge number of carbon dioxide absorbers to the world.

• Own Constructed Rainwater Reservoir to "Conserve" Community's Water Source

Double A has its own constructed reservoir called "Emerald Lake". The company collects surplus water from the year round rainfall. It took four years to complete this gargantuan reservoir which started construction in 1991 and was subsequently finished for operation in 1995. The company spent 400 million baht to support the construction of this project. The reservoir has the capacity of 35 million cubic meters which is purposely built to "Conserve" water during rainy seasons. Emerald Lake supports 100% of Double A's water needs in its mill operations without tapping on publicly supplied water. Double A also use wash press technology to squeeze out excess water from wet pulp to reuse and further reduce water consumption.  In addition, recycled water is used to irrigate the trees around the mill.

• Biomass Energy "Generated" from Residual Wastes

Double A adheres to the concept of "No Waste is wasted" for every part of Double A Paper-Tree is utilized to its best advantage. Wood chips are used for pulp production, an essential raw material for paper manufacture. Residual waste like bark and lignin are mixed with rice husks to produce biomass fuel for generating electricity at Double A's own power plant. Using the wastes from Double A Paper-Tree as biomass fuel helps saving 340 million liters of diesel oil every year. Double A helps the country to save 10,000 million baht of import cost per year.

 › Modern Water Treatment System

Double A uses state of the art biological treatment system called the "bacteria digestion process" in treating contaminated water. The process is said to be compatible with Scandinavian standards.

• Preliminary process: First, foreign materials (such as wood pieces) from the waste water are removed using a golden sieve. Second, the filtered water is put into a mixing pond to adjust the alkaline content (fit for bacteria operation and pulp precipitation). Lastly, the temperature is adjusted and Urea Phosphate is added (a special compound which increases the efficiency of bacteria to digest contaminated water).
• The filtered water from the first process is delivered to an air accumulation pond wherein the oxygen content is increased. It will then digest all the contaminated substances and exhaust it. Lastly, dregs are separated through the sediment tanks, and thus produce clean water (with the right BOD and COD level compatible with regulated standard from the Factory Bureau) as a finished result.

 › Environment Friendly Water Treatment

After the treatment, the water will be stored in a pond and will be used to water the factory yard and Paper Trees around the mill. Double A has paper trees planted on 20,000 – 30,000 Rai of land which consumes 100,000 m3 of treated water a day. The place is equipped with mini sprinklers (12 mm-centered watering) in order to save money and consumption. In addition, the company offers water supply to all the companies situated in the 304 industrial zone.

› Low water consumption (dry process)

The Company uses a special dry process in making wood chips. It does not use the traditional practice of immersing wood to the water in order to peel off the bark.

› Lowest water consumption for pulp bleaching process

With the use of modern technology, the company uses only 6-7 cubic meter per ton of pulp in its bleaching process compared to other factories who usually consumes over a hefty 60 cubic meter per ton of pulp.

 › Bleaching system with ECF

The Company uses the latest bleaching process that is Elementary Chlorine Free (ECF). The method is said to be chlorine gas free and does not produce dioxin which is said to be harmful to the environment.

 › Waste Utilization

Wood bark, chips, used water with Lignin, and sludge is utilized as fuel to produce steam/energy. The produced electricity is supplied through the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) under the Small Power Producing project (SPP). Likewise, the Carbon Dioxide from the Power and Recovery Plant is transformed into PCC or Precipitated Calcium Carbonate which is used as an ingredient in producing quality (bright) paper.

› Recycling system for chemical substances

In order to generate electricity from the used water, reagents from the previous processes are recycled. Likewise, Calcium Carbonate is added and used (produces limestone) to the reaction.

 › Quality of Air

The foul smell produced during the boiling process is eliminated by immersing limestone in the recovery boiler. Likewise, Pulp Mill 2 uses a burning process called "Quench System" wherein the smoke is transformed into Methanol (a kind of fuel). In case the Quench System is not available, the company uses the "Flare System" as an alternative option. In addition, the "Electro Static Precipitator" (ESP) decimates 99% of the dust and provides efficient 24 hour operation.

 › Quality of Noise

The noise produced in the Wood Chip Plant (60 decibels) is lower than the normal rate set by the Industrial Ministry. With this, the site is said to be employee/community friendly.

  • 100 million trees 6.7 million tons* *Weight of tree in calculation is 70 kg. on the average By the next 3 years, before its harvest period, these Double A Paper Trees will have reduced 6,539 million tons of CO2 in the atmosphere.
